This week marked the sixth annual Eater Awards, during which Eater and its 24 city sites recognized the best of the best in dining and drinking from the last year. Awards were given in categories such as chef of the year, bartender of the year, and restaurant of the year; they also honor restaurant design, pop-ups, comebacks, and more.
As usual, the winners were celebrated at an event in New York City on Monday night — an annual tradition that team Eater looks forward to each year. But for the 2015 awards, we did something different onsite: created a multipage "app" built by Vox Media's editorial product team to help highlight the winners. The result was a cover story-type feature that has a separate page for each city and lays out all of the winners and why they're being recognized for their accomplishments in a visually interesting format that's easy to read and navigate.
Why is this cool? Not only did Vox Media's product team build something awesome and customizable so that editorial verticals can use it in the way that's best suited for the content they're trying to present, but it also helps readers absorb stories in new ways and new formats, allows them to share individual pages easily from within the app, and has a responsive design that makes it user-friendly on any platform, whether that's a cell phone, tablet, or computer.
