Today Vox Media Podcast Network and Cafe announced the launch of Up Against The Mob, a new seasonal podcast exploring the trials and tribulations of taking on the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. Hosted by Elie Honig, former head of the Organized Crime Unit at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, the show’s first season will focus on the Italian mafia, featuring unprecedented access to the people who lived and worked in the mob world: mobsters-turned-cooperators, undercover federal agents, defense lawyers, prosecutors, psychologists, and journalists. The first episode of the six-episode season is out today, with new episodes dropping every Wednesday. Up Against The Mob is the second podcast to launch since the podcast studio led and co-founded by former Manhattan U.S. attorney Preet Bharara joined Vox Media earlier this year.
“The best part of being a mob prosecutor is the stories, the human drama of it, the surreal (but all too real) stories,” says Honig. “In this podcast, we bring listeners inside the mob world. It’s like the movies, but better.”
Honig is a CNN senior legal analyst, who previously worked for 14 years as a federal and state prosecutor. He successfully prosecuted over 100 members and associates of La Cosa Nostra, including Bosses and other high-ranking members of the mafia, earning the nickname “Hotshot Honig” from the Gotti family and public plaudits from Bharara, who called him “organized crime’s worst nightmare.” During his career, Honig prosecuted and tried federal cases involving organized crime, human trafficking, public corruption, violent crime, and more. He’s also the author of bestselling book, Hatchet Man: How Bill Barr Broke the Prosecutor’s Code and Corrupted the Justice Department, and writes the weekly Note From Elie column featured in the Cafe Brief newsletter.
